NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio Texas
1107 PM CST Thursday Feb 26 2015

Aviation... /update for 06z tafs/

The more conservative MOS guidances wound up being a better pick
over the WRF simulated low cloud product...although the VFR layer
clouds of 4000-9000 feet are more in line with that trend. MVFR ceilings
remain hung over the western Hill Country and Edwards Plateau...
so have pushed back MVFR ceilings until daybreak along I-35 and to 10z
at drt. Gradual deterioration of sky conditions should finish out
later periods...but with the predominantly NE low level winds
bringing in more dry air will hold of introducing precipiation for
now.

Previous discussion... /issued 1004 PM CST Thursday Feb 26 2015/

Update...
only minor changes have been made to the forecast for the
remainder of this evening. The main change was to adjust hourly
temperatures... dew points and winds to account for the latest
observational trends. Otherwise...light radar echoes continue just
north of Burnet County. Some of the hi-res models also suggest
some light precipitation may develop over The Hill Country
tonight...so we/ll leave a slight chance for light snow and
sleet. The lower layers remain very dry...so it will take some
time for the column to moisten and allow precipitation to reach
the ground. Overnight lows in the middle 20s and middle 30s are expected
across the region.

Previous discussion... /issued 251 PM CST Thursday Feb 26 2015/

Short term (tonight through Friday night)...
upper air analysis this morning showed a broad trough across the
country. At the surface a cold front was moving through the County Warning Area
from the north bringing another cold...dry airmass and strong
northerly winds. During this period the upper trough will become
sharper over the West Coast and the upper flow over Texas will
become more southwesterly. The cold front will be south of our
area by the start of this period with cold air settling in.
Boundary layer flow will become southeasterly to southerly leading
to isentropic upglide. There should be enough lift to produce
light precipitation. The best chance tonight will be across the
north...but this will only be a slight chance. The atmospheric
column should be cold enough for precipitation to be snow or a mix
of snow and sleet. Tomorrow chances will spread across more of the
County Warning Area. Models have trended warmer this morning...so most of the area
should see rain. Some middle-level warming will mean freezing rain or
sleet over the north. This pattern will continue Friday night.
Any precipitation through the period is expected to be very light
and no impacts are expected. There could be some minor ice or
snow on elevated surfaces...bridges...or overpasses. The most
likely area of winter precipitation will be from Pandale to Boerne
to Taylor. This includes the Austin area Friday morning. The area
will shrink to the north Friday afternoon and night.

Long term (saturday through thursday)...
the upper level flow across Texas will remain southwesterly
through the weekend and early part of next week. This will allow
the isentropic upglide flow from the southeast to continue over
the weekend. There will be a small area of winter precipitation
from Rocksprings to Medina to Georgetown Saturday morning until
temperatures rise above freezing. There will be warm advection
beyond this point. So chances for precipitation will continue...but it
will be rain everywhere. Tuesday a Pacific cold front will move
through bringing a chance for thunderstorms mainly over the eastern
half of the County Warning Area. Wednesday night another Arctic cold front will
drop down clearing things out.
